PORTADOWN RAPIDPLAY OPEN 20 MAY 2007

Portadown Chess Club held a five-round rapidplay tournament at Portadown Rugby Club. Time limit was 25 minutes each player. The winner was a newcomer to Ulster chess - Adam Giermaniuk, originally from Poland but now living in Newry. He scored 4 points from his 5 games, the same total as Gerald Rogan from the host club. However Germaniuk had played much stronger opposition and won the event on tie-break. The winner of the under 1400 Grading prize was Colin Fenton, while the Junior prize went to Aran O'Hare.

CITY OF BELFAST FESTIVAL 16-17 JUNE 2007

Belfast Boat Club was once again the venue for the City of Belfast. In the Nemtzov Cup it always looked to be a race for first between joint Ulster champions Stephen Scannell and Michael Waters. They drew their individual encounter in round three, but Waters had to concede a draw to Grading Prize winner Ian Davis in the final round and finished half-a-point behind Scannell.

In the subsidiary Henderson Cup (for players rated under-1600) there was a much stronger field than last year, with 6 players rated over 1500. It was the lowest rated of those six, QUB captain Chris Millar, who took first prize with an unbeaten 5 out of 6. Joint second were Joseph Mordeno and Paul McLoughlin, with Grading prizes going to Cathal Murphy, Pat McKillen and Alan Burns.

Final standings in both tournaments
