IRISH JUNIOR CHAMPION

David Grzymek of Sullivan Upper and Bangor Chess Club has won the Irish Under 14 title at the Irish Double Velvet Junior Championships which were held in Galway from the 16th to the 18th April 2004.

IRISH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP DUBLIN 24-25 APRIL 2004

Fisherwick Chess Club was the Ulster representative in a four-cornered contest for the Irish club title. After narrow losses to Rathmines/Crumlin and Phibsboro in the first two rounds, a heavy defeat against Dublin in the final round consigned Fisherwick to fourth place.

Final Placings 1st Rathmines/Crumlin 12.0; 2nd Phibsboro 10.5; 3rd Dublin 8.0; 4th Fisherwick 5.5.

CATHEDRAL QUARTER ARTS FESTIVAL SPEEDCHESS WATERFRONT HALL 2 MAY 2004

This was a joint initiative between the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, the Ulster Chess Union and the Waterfront Hall. The tournament took place from 1.00 p.m.-6.00 p.m., games had a 40 minutes session and there was a total of five rounds. The day's chess entertainment at the Waterfront Hall concluded with the screening of "Game Over" (a documentary film on the 1997 Kasparov -IBM Deep Blue Match).

ULSTER TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL 16 MAY 2004

This took place at Queen's University Staff Common Room. Clifton House beat Fisherwick by 5.5 points to 4.5 in the double-round Final, despite having to default a board in the first- match. Full results and brief report
