Tom Clarke and Stephen Scannell finished equal first in the Williamson Shield, drawing their individual encounter and winning all the rest of their games to finish with 5.5 points out of 6. Ian Woodfield, who was 3rd equal with Paul McLoughlin, won the Grading Prize.

In the Challengers, Ciaran Marron started with 4.5 out of 5 to go a full point ahead of the rest of the field. However a final round loss to David Grzymek (who won the Grading Prize) allowed Alex Beckett and Sean Linton to catch Marron and share first prize with him.

IRISH YOUTH INTERPROVINCIALS 2003
The Irish Youth Interprovincials were held on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th February in Gonzaga College, Dublin. There were Under 19 and Under 16 competitions, each for teams of six. The best Ulster individual performances were by Jonathan Woodfield (Under 19) with 2.5/3 and Calum Leitch (Under 16) who won all 3 of his games.

Bangor Chess Club entertained
STEPHEN SCANNELL, three-times Ulster Chess Champion, on Thursday 27 February. The American-born Champion gave a simultaneous display on 18 boards, beginning at 8 p.m. and ending at 11.15 p.m.In the earlier part of the evening, Mr Scannell faced tough opposition on many boards; but in the later stages his superior skill won through in several endgames. The American’s final tally was; won 9, lost 4, drawn 5.
Those who won their games against Mr Scannell were James O’Fee (Bangor), David McAlister (Hillsborough), Damien Lavery (Royal Victoria Hospital) and the promising schoolboy David Grzymek (Sullivan Upper).
Those who drew their games were Alan McConnell, Kenny Browne, Philip Todd and Richard Proctor (all Bangor), and Paul McLoughlin (Royal Victoria Hospital). Others taking part were Mark Seidman, Ron Henderson, Owen Wilson, Richard Morrow, Gary Johnston, Chris Kelly, and Kenneth Nicholl (all Bangor); and the Symington brothers, David and Stephen, (RBAI).
CITY OF BELFAST CHAMPIONSHIPS 29-30 MARCH 2003
The City of Belfast Championships
were held for the first time since 2000 and for only the second time since 1996. The venue was the Queen's University Staff Common Room. There were two sections and in the senior event the Nemtzov Cup Tom Clarke scored an emphatic victory with 5.5 points from his 6 games. The next highest scorers were John Masterson (the only other unbeaten player), Desmond Moreland and Calum Leitch, who all finished with 4.0 points. Henderson Cup top seed Chris Kelly beat former Ulster Junior champion Michael Kane in Round 1. Kelly then won his next three games to establish a one-point lead, but draws in the last two rounds allowed Kane to catch him up after five straight wins.
