FISHERWICK CLUB TOURNAMENT 2 OCTOBER 2000-2 APRIL 2001

This go-as-you-please tournament was run on similar lines to the UCU Summer tournament at Civil Service. To be eligible for prizes players had to play at least 12 games, including 2 of the last 3 nights.

IRISH OPEN/LEINSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS DUBLIN 14-16 APRIL 2001

The Easter holiday weekend saw the revival of the Irish Open. The event was jointly organised by the Irish Chess Union and the Leinster Chess Union and incorporated the Leinster Championships. Five Ulster players made the trip to Dublin and three of them, most notably Desmond Moreland equal first in the Intermediate, featured among the prizewinners.

MALAHIDE MILLENNIUM TOURNAMENT 5-7 MAY 2001

A small contingent of Ulster players journeyed south for the richly endowed Malahide tournament. In the Open Danny Mallaghan and Nicholas Pilkiewicz both finished on 3.5 and won grading prizes, but Desmond Moreland, after his first place in the Irish Open Intermediate, found it tougher going in the top section here and only scored 1.0. In the Major Paul McLoughlin finished equal second.

PHIBSBORO TOURNAMENT 18-20 MAY 2001

The fifth major tournament to be held in Ireland in the last two months saw two Ulster competitors travelling south. Both Danny Mallaghan in the Open and Desmond Moreland in the Intermediate turned in excellent performances.

ULSTER TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP 12-13 MAY 2001

North Belfast beat Fisherwick A in the double round final 6-4 and has qualified to play in the Irish Club Championship taking place on 9-10 June. RVH won the Plate. The rival attractions of very good weather and the FA Cup Final probably contributed to the small turnout of 5 teams. Report

WATERFRONT SCHOOLS CHALLENGE TOURNAMENTS
BELFAST I JUNE AND 7 JUNE 2001

Primary Schools' Team Event 1 June 2001
24 teams from 6 primary schools from as far apart as Portstewart and Killinchy competed in this event.
The winners were "The Noble Knights" from Inchmarlo Preparatory School, Belfast.

Primary Schools' Individual Event 7 June 2001
First prize went to Steven Mullan of Cairnshill Primary School with 5 points from his 5 games. In second place was Nigel Chan of Inchmarlo Preparatory School.

BELFAST SUMMERFEST JUNE 16-17 JUNE 2001

40 competitors competed in 2 sections - an excellent turnout considering that many Ulster chess clubs are closed for the summer. In the Open Stephen Scannell won his fifth title of the season, while in the Major Michelle Cowley of Trinity College Dublin, after her success in the Target Recruitment Major 2 months ago, was again victorious over the local players.

2. Michael Holmes 4.0;
3=4. Nicholas Pilkiewicz, Danny Mallaghan 3.5
(Pilkiewicz took third prize on tie-break, but Mallaghan had the consolation of securing the Under-1900 Grading Prize.) The Under-1750 Grading Prize was won by Desmond Moreland.
