This very strong Swiss attracted a seven-strong Irish contingent, including three Ulster players, Keith Allen, Dermot Murtagh and John Nicholson. Irish champion Colm Daly drew with the co-winners Shipov and Sutovsky while Allen (now resident in the Isle of Man) beat strong English GM John Emms.

1.e4 d6 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 c6 This off-beat system is a favourite of Hickman's, but John was well prepared for it. 4.Nf3 Bg4 5.h3 Bxf3 6.Qxf3 e6 7.d4 d5 8.e5 Nfd7 9.Be3 Qb6 10.0–0–0 Bb4 11.f5 A typical Nicholson idea, prepared to accept structural weaknesses in order to keep his attack going. 11...Bxc3 12.bxc3 g6 13.fxe6 fxe6 14.Qg4 c5 15.dxc5 Qc6 Black hopes to consolidate his position with this move, but White's next comes as a nasty surprise. 16.Bb5! Qxb5™ 17.Qxe6+ Kd8 17...Kf8 18.Bh6# 18.Rxd5 Kc8 18...Kc8 19.c6 Qxc6 20.Rc5 19.c6 1–0
