Williamson Shield 1952
"A close contest won by an old-timer"
This was how W. J. Allen, chess correspondent of the Belfast News-Letter described the battle for honours in the 1952 Williamson Shield.
Allen himself was an old-timer, winner of the Williamson Shield on three successive occasions in the years 1923 to 1925. After his run of success P. J. McMahon bettered it by winning the Shield four years in a row from 1926 to 1929. After McMahon's victory in 1929, competition for the Shield ceased and was only resumed in 1945. The 1952 renewal was an eight-player round robin, and McMahon extended his number of victories in the Shield to five.
Here are two of his games from that event, the first a win against the veteran lady player Hilda Chater, featuring an instructive error in the Queen's Gambit, the second his only loss in the tournament against J. B Steen.
