UCU Civil Service Summer Tournament 1991-2006
Hammel Cup
Played through the summer months at the rate of one game per week, players play as often (or as little) as they want, but must play 10 games to be eligible for the prize-list. The Hammel Cup had originally been presented to the Belfast Chess Club as a trophy to go to the winner of that club's Handicap Tournament. The first winner was W. L. Brown in 1948-49. In 2002 the UCU decided that the Hammel Cup, which had last been played for in the 1970-71 season, should go to the winner of the Civil Service Tournament. Exceptionally the 2002 event was played at CIYMS Chess Club.
